Path of Exile Item Upgrades
The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading them. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear because of their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item that they're attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components in them using an expert or greater salvage kit.
The amount of damage an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. The ability to absorb damage of an item of armor will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.
There are several kinds of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have distinct effects. For instance, certain upgrades will grant the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item can be given, as illustrated below.
Some upgrades also feature magical or a combination of technology and magic, which is shown by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades require charges to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh daily or never expire, depending on the upgrade.
The cheapest way to upgrade armor is with Iron Ore, which can be obtained through exploring the surroundings and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, but it can be obtained from smelters located in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be used on armor pieces that are of high-level. These upgrades can give significant improvements in stats and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.
The player must be aware that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level will increase its defense values. However, it can also affect its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor beyond +9. The boost in defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of certain aspects of the weapon. Upgrades can boost the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Some weapons also have special upgrades that improve their innate qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces weapon overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed to cause more damage) are two examples.
The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by completing Side Quests, killing a certain number of bosses or monsters, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.
Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade fee that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade, the higher the level. The cost of upgrading will be less if you have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.
In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2: Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific number of Bars. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would be reset.
This is still possible, but it is dependent heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off visiting stores and buying equipment with low upgrade levels but good base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a greater likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.
To improve their skills quicker, players usually prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their squadmates utilize to increase their power. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to enhance its effectiveness when accompanied by experts in biotics like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels are placed in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is a method of creating them. You combine the gemstone with specific reagents on a table. The higher the tier of the gemstone has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be gotten from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or through salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.
The quality of a jewel can be improved at the Jeweler in stages that range from Crude to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ depending on the tier the jewel is at when it's inserted into weapons, jewelry, or equipment.
The Jeweler can create all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones which you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.
Using more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable and is typically done for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, so repeated friction from pivots won't damage them as easily.
A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. These are a small perk and are able to be swapped easily however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis can't be exchanged and can only be retrieved by using an Upgrade extractor or salvaging using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage tool.

The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any piece of equipment. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's often more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.
Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however will pick either a pink or green ward, based on the matchup. These choices can impact the hero's ability to manage the map.
In addition to the items mentioned above, players will also find other trinkets in the form trophies and rewards throughout the game.
